Training Your Kitten To The Litter Box

Kittens are usually trained to the litter box by their mothers. Generally when they come home with us they already know what to do. Sometimes, though, kittens need a little encouragement, especially when the litter box or litter is different from what they have been using. Place your kitten on the litter in the box. It will automatically begin to scratch. Make sure that the sides of the litter box are not too high so the kitten can gain access easily. Keep the box in a place that is accessible to the kitten as well. Put the kitten in the litter box when it wakes up, after eating and whenever it looks like it is looking for a place to urinate or defecate. Never punish your kitten for accidents and always use lots of praise when the kitten uses the box appropriately. Until your kitten has had the proper vaccinations, keep other cats in the house away from the kitten's litter box.
