Neurodermatitis - personal experiences

My two yr old male cat [indoor] has recently developed a habit of constantly cleaning himself by licking and light biting. The areas he frequently cleans is his paws, legs and butt. This goes on even in the night. What could possibly be wrong?

My 9 year old female cat (also indoor) has been cleaning herself constantly for a while now, and I think it may be out of boredom. This really helped, thanks :-)
