Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Infection - personal experiences

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Infection experience by - Becky

We have three FIV+ cats - all neutered males. The youngest one (almost 11 months old) has been the sickest of the three and has frequent bouts of respiratory infections and one time has been treated for stomatitis. The older two are also positive but their vet feels that they are carriers and not actually dealing with the illness like the youngest one is.Keeping them indoors is a must and they have adapted really well to life indoors. They have plenty of toys and the oldest one is the head of the pecking order - they are fed canned food twice a day and dry food is left out for them to eat during the day while we're working. Our oldest cat has been with us for almost 6 years, the second one has been with us for 3. FIV is not an automatic death sentence for your cat!
Anybody who wants to adopt an FIV+ cat will have to continue to reinforce to people that the FIV is NOT transferable to humans and they are safe to be around. Since most people keep cats indoors, to adopt an FIV+ cat is not a hardship. FIV+ cats need love and homes and I hope that anyone who reads this will consider adopting an FIV+ cat or kitten. Our first cat was discovered to be FIV+ about three months after he adopted us and I made the decision not to have him put down (I have switched vets since)and I have not regretted the decision once.
Please give an FIV+ cat a chance - you'll be glad you did.

I have a Stray cat that got bitten by other cat. Learned from my Vet that she contracted FIV positive. He advices me to put the cat to sleep. Is there any way to cure her ? I am unwilling to put her down as she is a very sweet and obedient cat. Is so sad , if there is a way to save her life. I will definatey do it by all means. So wondered how long can she prolonged her life.

I rescued "Baby" in April 1998 when he was about 1 month old under the wheel of a car. He was raised indoors with about 5 other stray kittens. When he was about 6 months old I rescued another set of 3 kittens which had used "Baby" as its weaning "Mom". FYI Baby is a tomcat and it was quite funny to see these 3 kitten sucking on his chest with him unable to do anything about it.
Baby grew up well with 11 other cats without any ailment until he was about 6 years old when he started having ulcers in his mouth and bad breath. He was diagnosed with "FIV".
For the first 3 years he had no problems eating his dry biscuits but later developed severe ulcers and rotten teeth which required him to be on medication (daily)and that also meant no more biscuits for him to chew on. I had no choice but to feed him boiled fish/chicken and wet tin cat food (usually tuna).
Baby sadly left me in February 2012 at the age of 14 years. By then the Vet also suspected that he may have also suffered from renal failure. I donot think that living with a Cat with FIV is a problem but be aware that in later years, more TLC would be needed when tending to the loved pet.

I had sex with my cat one day as my wife was useless in bed, and I gave it aids. I later passed away.
