General information on Giardiasis
Giardiasis is a disease caused by the giardia parasite. The parasites that cause giardiasis are obtained by drinking water contaminated with giardia cysts. Once the cat has ingested the cysts, the cysts open in the intestines and attach their selves to the intestinal wall. Once in the intestinal wall, they begin to reproduce. The primary symptom caused by giardiasis is diarrhea. The Diarrhea may be acute or chronic. Overall, there is not much known as-matter-of-fact about the giardia parasite. What is known is that infection by the giardia parasite is common, but the giardiasis disease caused by the parasite is rare.
Symptoms of Giardiasis
Some of the symptoms of giardiasis may be: foul-smelling watery diarrhea, weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, and loss of nutrition.
Treatments for Giardiasis
The treatment for giardiasis is anti-parasitic medications such as metronidazole. There is a vaccine for giardiasis available, but it is rarely recommended due to the how mild giardiasis usually is and due to the fact that giardiasis responds well to medication.
