General information on Niemann-pick
Niemann-pick disease is a genetic metabolic disease found in Siamese cats. Niemann-pick disease is caused from a recessive autosomal trait. Niemann-pick causes a progress deterioration of nerves as well as causing an enlarged spleen and liver. These symptoms cause the affect cat to experience progressively worsening anorexia, lack of coordination, and paresis that eventually causes the affected catís death. Cats affected by Niemann-pick disease typically present with symptoms by four months of age and die before reaching one year of age.
Symptoms of Niemann-pick
Some of the symptoms of Niemann-pick disease may be: stunted growth, lack of coordination that progressively worsens, blindness, anorexia, loss of ability to control the limbs, depression, enlarged abdomen (caused by an enlarged spleen and liver), neurological deterioration that progressively worsens, and death.
Treatments for Niemann-pick
There is no treatment for Niemann-pick disease as of yet. The only thing that can be done to help prevent Niemann-pick disease from occurring is to ensure that cats that are carriers of the genetic disease are not bred.
