General information on Anemia
Anemia is characterized by a reduced number of red blood cells. Anemia itself is not a disease, but can be caused by other diseases that decrease the production of red blood cells, such as parasites, trauma, and tumors in the intestines, kidneys and bladder.
Symptoms of Anemia
Symptoms of Anemia in cats may include a loss of the pinkish color of the cat's gums, listlessness or lethargy, appetite loss, weight loss, excessive sleeping, and overall weakness.
Treatments for Anemia
If you suspect Anemia in your cat, schedule a visit to the vet. Anemia that is nutritionally based responds well to a corrective diet and a replacement of missing nutritional substances. In severe cases, your vet may order a transfusion.
